TLDR: We’re going premium (ish) to stay independent and DIY with the support of our readers, not random advertisers or investors. With your help we can keep expanding on what Perfectly Imperfect can be while remaining a resource for rec-seekers worldwide.

When this newsletter started in August 2020 it was just us writing recommendations for our friends, and occasionally we’d feature a guest who was probably also our friend. I’ll spare you the nostalgia (you can read more here), but we’ve grown a lot.

Since our humble beginnings we’ve shared 2413 recommendations, published 320 guest features, and built a Substack community of 34,000 people— all while keeping our content 100% free. We didn’t even sneak affiliate links into our posts, it never felt right.

It wasn’t the goal to make money with PI. This newsletter was started for curious people who chase the high of discovery and want to escape their algorithm. Whether you find your new favorite album or Michael Imperioli inspires you to “feed the fish, turtles, ducks, and other birds lakeside in Central Park”, we believe that a simple recommendation can be a powerful tool for learning about something new & sharing our life experiences with one another.

However, after nearly 3 years, it’s time for us to ask for help. There’s a huge amount of work that goes into making this newsletter happen. I won’t bore or guilt you with the details, but despite my crazy passion for what we’re doing, it can be very difficult (i.e. impossible) to balance it all with the full-time day job that actually pays my bills.
