Cool people like cool things, which is why we asked Mac DeMarco to share a taste of his taste on Perfectly Imperfect.

Mac Demarco is a Canada-born, Los Angeles-based, musician and in my humble opinion, one of the most influential artists of the 2010s. As an 18 year old I quickly fell in love with the fun, charming, and warm sound that Mac refers to as "jizz-jazz", and it’s been a pleasure to age with his music over the last decade. I’m also a fierce defender of the slow, sparse, and melancholy Here Comes The Cowboy which felt like a conscious rejection of his crazy live persona and a good-bye to the more upbeat jangle-pop sound. Mac is going even further in this direction with his lovely new instrumental record, Five Easy Hot Dogs (out January 20th), that’s made up of songs he recorded in different cities while on a road trip. Lucky for us, Mac is here to tell us what he’s been into.

Without further ado

🤵 Suit Busters

Suit Busters is a collection of men who enjoy several different fetishes involving wearing suits. Sometimes it’s getting the suits dirty, other times wet, sometimes taking a suit for a walk in a swamp or creek, and so on. I came across Suit Busters’ youtube channel four or five years ago. I’ve been interested in this style of content on youtube since the platform began when I was a teenager. The production value is very high in these videos, very artfully executed, if you’re interested in more explicit versions of their content it can be found on the Suit Busters website.

🥪 Estadao

Estadao is a small restaurant in the downtown of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Estadao is open twenty four hours a day and is home to the greatest sandwich on the planet earth. It’s called a “Pernil”. It’s roasted pork on a kaiser bun, it’s got cheese and if you ask they’ll lay it all down on a ring of pineapple. The place is mega cute too, everybody’s got a nice uniform, there’s fruit hanging from the roof, nice tile. There’s these jars of hot peppers suspended in oil along all the counters, it will give you diarrhea, but it tastes amazing. Now when you are in Brazil, you know where to go.

📹 Youtube Trending Page

Several years ago I changed my preferences across all my google accounts to diminish the effects of anything being recommended to me by algorithms. I thought it would be good for me, I’d have to search things out instead of having them force fed. I was wrong, I forgot how to do all of that and now I just wind up on the trending page several times a day. It’s really depressing but I also find it interesting. I know a lot about Mr Beast now. It’s not exactly news, or even generally useful most of the time, but it’s something. I watch drama videos about “creators” I have never heard of before, tons of “we’re having a baby” videos and “we broke up” videos. It’s horrible and I hate it, but I also feel closer to what humans are like nowadays.

🏍️ Motorcycles

I got into riding motorcycles this year, I have four of them now. I think it’s a beautiful thing to do, kind of makes riding in cars feel like watching tv comparatively. But specifically what I would like to talk about here is: driving around parking garage lift barriers. I don’t pay for parking garages anymore, I just drive around the barrier. Sometimes I take the ticket, but I don’t pay for it, I drive around the barrier. I love it most when there’s an attendant in the small booth that operates the lift barrier. I like to look at this attendant directly in their eyes and drive around the barrier.

🍲 Wonton with noodle

I’ve been eating wonton soup all my life, why was it only last month that I had it with noodles? What the fuck? It rocks.

🐝 90’s Sting

I love Sting, I love the Police, but there’s something about 90’s Sting… it’s confusing, it’s got a different flavor, it’s tech, it’s strange. He’s still sexy, but is the music? I think so… sometimes? Recently, my friend Kirin summed up 90’s Sting perfectly with these four words: “pure, pastoral, celtic, tantric”. Thank you for your art mr. Sting.

🇾Ⓜ️🇨🅰️ The YMCA

Recently I have tried to become more healthy than I was before. I don’t know if it’s working, but I enjoy spending time at my local YMCA. My mom had to work when I was a kid so I grew up at a YMCA. I’d be there before and after school every day until I was about 9. It felt like prison and I absolutely hated it. For some reason now though, I enjoy reminiscing at these places. I like how dirty the floor is in the locker room. I like brushing my teeth naked with men twice or thrice my age. Somebody stole my airpods out of the locker room a while ago. I tracked them and stood outside of his apartment building for a while. I’m not getting them back, he can have them. I wonder sometimes though, which of the nude men in the locker room he is.
