Cool people like cool things, which is why we asked Buck Meek to share a taste of his taste on Perfectly Imperfect.
Buck Meek is a Texas born, Los Angeles based singer and songwriter. Adrianne Lenker, Max Oleartchik, and Buck make up the band Big Thief, one of the most celebrated and prolific indie folk groups of the last decade. Since 2015 they’re put out five all-hit-no-miss albums to critical acclaim, toured the world, and even dropped some great solo work during this time. Meek is no exception and this Summer he released his third full length album, Haunted Mountain, which is a country folk record that he describes as a “collection of love songs.” He’s also recently built a studio at his home in LA and told us to tell you to send him music! Lucky for us, Buck is here to tell us what he’s been into.
Without further ado

🌌 Bioluminescence
A bioluminescent tide hit Los Angeles a couple of years ago, and I swam in the ocean around midnight, with the waves illuminated neon blue, as well as the water around my body, and even the wet sand like little explosions as I walked. I imagined being eaten by a neon shark. My hope is to swim in bioluminescence beneath the aurora borealis someday.
📸 Taking photos of friends
I love taking photos of friends with my camera. Even the most casual moments become mythical in reflection as we grow older together. My motto is to never ask someone to smile, make them smile.
🍚 Donabe / Komadosan
I love cooking koshihikari sushi rice in a Japanese donabe clay pot. Rinse the rice 4 or 5 times quickly so it doesn't absorb the silty water, soak for at least 20 minutes, dry in a colander or on mesh for an hour ideally, cook, then add about 24ml sushi vinegar for every rice cup. It's so nice you can enjoy it without soy sauce.
🎸 Playing guitar along with records
One of my favorite ways to practice guitar is to just play along with a whole record, and try to copy every lick, but never rewind. The rush of playing along with a band in real time keeps you on your toes, and even if you only have time to mimic the rhythmic content or the rough melodic shape, you're working on so many things simultaneously - most importantly your ear. It's so much fun to play along with an Albert King or Marc Ribot Y Los Cubanos Postizos album.
