Cool people like cool things, which is why we asked Conor Oberst to share a taste of his taste on Perfectly Imperfect.
Conor Oberst is a legendary Omaha and Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter best known for his work in Bright Eyes, a band that was a huge part of my youth and remains one of my all time favorites. Over his nearly 30 year career he’s released music as Desaparecidos and The Mystic Valley Band, built up an impressive solo catalog with heavy hitters like Ruminations & Salutations, and went super group mode with Phoebe Bridgers as Better Oblivion Community Center. Conor just announced a bi-coastal residency in Los Angeles + New York City and was kind enough to give us a special presale password (PERFECTLYANDFRIENDS) so Perfectly Imperfect readers can snag tickets before the masses. Lucky for us, Conor is here to tell us what he’s been into.
Without further ado

💦 Hydroflask Wide Mouth Flex Straw Cap (Sippy lid)
I know it’s a fad, but I, like many people got addicted to my hydro flask because it’s like a small R2-D2 type droid that reminds you to drink water all day. I was inseparable from mine for the last tour. The sippy lid is an absolute must or else you will spill water all over yourself and your keyboard.
🚬 American Spirit Menthol Lights
I know smoking is bad. I am not encouraging anyone to do it but you also just look cool when you smoke, its just a fact. These are my favorite cigarettes and because of the menthol you dont have to brush your teeth.
🏓 Wii Sports Tennis (Doubles)
I missed the Wii craze first time around but recently got introduced to it by some friends. It’s so fun I can’t stop playing but it’s best when you have 4 people. It’s a great substitute for pickle ball in the winter.
👟 Snow Peak x Kozaburo Slip on Shoes
Just got a pair of these shoes! They are comfortable, stylish, and made me faster than I already was.
🐕 Freshpet Nature's Fresh Small Breed Chicken Recipe Dog Food
So I have a precious dog whose name is Petra. She’s the love of my life but she’s a very picky eater. She’s a little terrier mix rescue dog and this is the one food she will reliably eat.
🪶 Feathers by Thor Hansen
Thor Hansen is a genius. He’s a great writer, scientist and naturalist. This is his expansive masterpiece about all things feathers. I highly recommend, enjoyable and educational.
📺 Arcane
Weirdly another video game reference. I truly have never been that into video games but I really like this animated series on Netflix. I have never played League of Legends but I don’t think that matters. Its just a really well written, engaging series that is candy for the eyes.
🎧 Akira Kosemura / One Day & Al Olender / Easy Crier
Two records!
Akira Kosemura is a Japanese composer and pianist. This is an instrumental piano record that I can’t stop listening to. In the vein of Erik Satie, it reluctantly makes me believe that some people have souls.
Al is a good friend of mine hailing from the Hudson Valley. It’s hard to explain why she’s so good. It’s something close to sad show tunes that contemplate the human condition. Wonderful stuff.
