PERFECTLY IMPERFECT MUSIC
Campy Electropop, Shoegazey Alt Rock, A Beloved "Indie" Favorite, and more.
This is the first edition of a new music recommendation column where I (Tyler) will dive into what I’ve been listening to. You can expect a mix of new stuff, underground-ish music from NYC (and beyond…) that’s exciting me, and older favorites + deeper cuts. I expect this format to morph a bit as I figure it out, so stick with me here. Maybe there’ll even be some guest recs in the future, who knows.
Let’s dive in…
I’ve been a fan of Test Subjects (Melody English’s synth-pop project with Sam Glick) for a while now so I was curious about her new solo material and… it’s crazy good. If you’re into alt-rock leaning shoegaze from the 90s and early 2000s, like Ride, you’re going to love it. Melody has an incredible knack for dreamy melodies. “Parasite” dropped with a cool music video created by friends of the newsletter Fiona Kane & Richard Smith, who can do no wrong in my eyes.
🎵 2Hollis
If the cringey “Indie Sleaze” labeling or overall animosity for a scene has prevented you from enjoying anything in the world of electroclash/witchouse revival, this is your sign to snap out of it and just let yourself enjoy to the music. You’re free now. Don’t miss out on some of the most exiciting electronic music right now with artists like The Hellp, 2Hollis, and Damon Rush trailblazing a new sound. This new LP 2 from Hollis is one of the best of the year so far.
