Cool people like cool things, which is why we asked cool person Sam Jayne to come on Perfectly Imperfect & spread the hot rec wealth.
Sam Jayne is an LA-based Creative Director and the founder of Jam, a brand that delves into themes of nature, architecture, music, and graphic design. As three dudes with day-jobs who run this newsletter, we think Sam’s ability to drive a side project as successful as Jam is really impressive, to say the least. Despite having a 9-5, he’s been cooking up some of our favorite apparel, objects, and collaborations such as the collection he dropped with Arc’teryx and the How Long Gone tote bag. And just last week he dropped these cool incense burners that are sculpted from rocks found in the southern California desert, definitely check those out. Sam has great taste and lucky for us, he’s here to talk about what he’s been into.
Without further ado

I've always been into riding bikes, but as options for things to do became a bit limited over the last year, it's become an essential activity for my mental and physical well-being. The Specialized Sequoia has been the perfect bike to get me around LA and off the pavement onto some sketchy mountain bike trails. It can even handle a jump if I'm in the mood to relive my "glory days" and deal with the fallout of eating shit. It's a bike that looks great and can take a beating if you're trying to get freaky out there — it does it all!
If you're into coffee and have been to LA or dealt with someone from LA, you've probably heard of MARU. It's for a good reason. Maru coffee is delicious, and if you're able to get to the Los Feliz location, you can see some cool people getting off fits, a respite from the butt wipe tee and big hat culture of Venice and West Hollywood. The creme de la creme order is an iced americano with oat milk and an almond croissant (which is good enough to be a rec. on its own)
This program (available on Netflix) centers around a diner in Japan that's open from midnight to six a.m. and the stories of the people who visit it. The show is both interesting and meditative — each episode is self-contained, so you can pop it on any time, take a break for a couple of weeks, and it'll be there waiting to embrace you like a warm hug.
Of course, this perfect for doing anything shoe is no longer in production and requires a little eBay hunting to acquire. A precursor to the popular foraging-centric dad shoe, the Jungle Moc the Orbit Moc has a neoprene upper, making the shoe easy to put on and more attractive on foot. These babies are from the 90s, so the glue is a little touch and go — don't be angry if they start falling apart after a few wears. It's a little bit of a gamble leveling up your Merrell game.
