Cool people like cool things, which is why we asked Daniela Lalita to share a taste of her taste on Perfectly Imperfect.

Daniela Lalita is a New York-based musician, artist, and director. I first saw her perform when she opened for Caroline Polachek right before the pandemic and I was blown away by her stage presence, sound, and visuals, but I was disappointed that she didn’t appear to have much music available online. Thankfully that’s no longer the case because she just dropped her debut EP Trececerotres, a haunting and beautiful collection of tracks that came accompanied with an impressive set of self-directed music videos for “Pisoteo”, “Tenía Razón” and “No Para.” And back in 2017 she debuted a critically-acclaimed performance art piece titled Madre: A Disruptive Environment, so Lalita is no stranger to thinking deeply about the visual element of her work. Lucky for us, Daniela is here to tell us what she’s been into.

Without further ado

🎭 Waldemar Januszczak videos

I play them in the back while making things, mostly when I'm doing something crafty I just put him in the background. I actually find his voice really soothing.

🦉 Owls

I like birds

🌪 Worn Out Silk

I've been feeling more comfortable/confident when wearing clothes I make especially with old silk, typically from 1910-20’s. They’re mostly old lingerie pieces or undergarment rags that I piece together. Netting old netting is nice too or lace that isn't very decorated.

☆ Using my fridge for skincare

I put moisturizers/ serums in there, even my perfume. It feels and looks nice and I don't really put food in it so why not

🫂 Pineal gland light therapy

It's incredible I highly recommend it.

👁🍃 Carl Stone's Al Noor

I think this is one of my favorite songs. I really appreciate how much he built out of using only like a 14 second voice sample for this huge, orchestral feeling 12 mn song.

🌬🍴🩼🗿🐴 Mimicking random sounds

I learned to do this from a very young age for commercials and theater but I don't do it often bc it can get awkward so only a very select group of ppl have experienced this.

📿🕯Religious verses by St Teresa of Avila

Religious verses by St Teresa of Avila, among other women, that were written down almost like mosaics on the walls surrounding the cloister garden in the Santa Teresa convent in Arequipa. I visited at the end of 2019 and really connected with some. I have this one on my background “sufre con ánimo igual, ama lo que mas lastima, que las más áspera lima limpia mejor que el metal.”
