New sh*t & old sh*t that Angel Prost and I have been listening to.

This is the 3rd edition of a music recommendation column where dive into what I’ve been listening to, occasionally with a friend or two. You can expect a mix of new tracks, music from NYC (and beyond) that’s exciting me, and older favorites + deepish cuts.

Today’s special guest is 1/2 of the duo Frost Children, Angel Prost, an incredible artist and someone that I’ve had the great pleasure of getting to know over the last year or so. If you’ve listened to Frost Children’s music, you already know that they pull from a wiiiiide array of influences (especially on the not yet released songs I’ve heard 🤫) and it’s on full display with Angel’s music recs below.

Frost Children just dropped a SPEED RUN Remix EP with remixes from them, Parker Corey, galen tipton, and Eliminate, and in a few weeks they’re heading out on tour with friend of PI George Clanton + death dynamic shroud so snag some tickets if they’re heading to your city.

Tyler 👉 🎵 Pleasure Systems - “Everything I Need”

Remember our last music column guest recommender Clarke? Well, he just dropped one of my favorite songs of the year & it has guest vocals from friend of PI Melody English (who also just dropped a great new track & video). This new track from his project Pleasure Systems feels like a refreshing take on the indie music of my youth, or maybe that's just because the instrumental feels mad cozy and the vocals remind me of Postal Service Ben Gibbard. I'm addicted to this one.

Angel 👉 🎵 Ryuichi Sakamoto - "20220123"

The late Sakamoto's final album from just before he died earlier this year, 12, is just twelve barebones piano ambient tracks drenched in reverb. In a recent Newsletter, I called this track "The Most Punk Track of 2023". To some, punk may mean "Loud", and/or, "Raucous". What's punk to me is "Length" and "Constancy". Something about hearing Sakamoto's tired, cancer-ridden breaths mixed just as loudly as the piano on this track feels extremely, sincerely truthful. Long, beautiful tones streaking through the air, punctuated by tiny dots of caring inhales and exhales. 

Tyler 👉 🎵 Dutch Interior

I probably would have never discovered Dutch Interior had I not been drawn in by this album art, so I think you should always judge a book by it’s cover. This LA band is one of my favorite finds this year, for sure. Their new album has more straight forward (but basically perfect) melancholy folk tracks like “I’ll Be Damned,” but also manages to sneak in more rockin’ cuts like “Cannibal Song” which builds up to a pretty euphoric ending. OK Dutch Interior! You have my attention.

Angel 👉 🎵 George Clanton - "Everything I Want"

Speaking of epic Walls of Sounds, the opening track off George's new album has a beautiful spectral wall and a catchy-as-hell vocal hook. The huge synths are accentuated by other things being mixed down which is kinda genius. This album does "The Big" (a sound I don't usually love, despite the Paranoul review) so well. It's music to consume in the biggest space and bounciest walls ever. In a cathedral. Or maybe heaven? It makes me start to like reverb again. Although I do wish he'd mix those damn vocals up... Also! We're going on tour with him in every US city (and some of Canada) this fall!
