Cool people like cool things, which is why we asked Harrison Patrick Smith to share a taste of his taste on Perfectly Imperfect.

Harrison Patrick Smith is a musician based in New York City. The night we met Harrison sent me the mp3 for a then unreleased track titled “Girls” and I was blown away by the energy, horniness, fat bass line, cocky delivery, and anthemic chorus. It’s somewhere in the ballpark of LCD Soundsystem, The Streets, The Rapture, and Beastie Boys, which makes a lot of sense seeing that he’s spent the last few years perfecting his rock sound under the name Turtlenecked and learning what gets the crowd going during his Thursday night DJ sets at Home Sweet Home. “Girls” is one of the best singles I’ve heard in a long time and everything has felt a bit different since it dropped. It really feels like a scene defining moment. Lucky for us, Harrison is here to tell us what he’s been into.

🎥 A Family Finds Entertainment by Ryan Trecartin (2004)

An absolutely nightmarish fantasia. First saw it on youtube in sophomore year of college and it blew my mind completely. I instantly felt understood by it and jealous that I didn’t make it. Its shocking and campy and overwhelming and a little scary too. My favorite quote is “Open the fucking fuckdoor."

👕 Stylo Au Plafond

Translates to to “Pen in the Ceiling,” Stylo for short. It’s Matt Michaud and Kieran Sutton’s new homespun fashion project which shares aesthetic sensibilities with Hollywood Gifts and Praying. I also see a little bit of Philadelphia painter Exene Karros’s influence. Their hand drawn designs include references to Blackrock, army men, Peter Griffin, Gamestop, Quiznos, Shell Gasoline, Ableton Live, and nuclear warheads. In essence, it captures the confusion and wonder of growing up in suburban America.

🍺 Spaghett

Aperol Spritz but throw away the champagne and replace it with the champagne of beers. 

Best enjoyed at a sidewalk cafe or in the park. Drink 2-3 for best results.

🏘️ Throwing house parties in NYC

A rare experience in the city. House parties have a charm and intimacy that just can’t be matched by a bar. Everyone’s forced to physically brush up against each other and talk to people they might not otherwise. A good house party is sexy in this way. Anyone who attended my last halloween party knows this well.

🎵 The Sound

Extremely underrated British post-punk band. The frontman had schizophrenia and killed himself by jumping in front of a train. Choice cuts are “Heartland” and “Missiles,” but their best song is “I Can’t Escape Myself.” Tortured, catchy, and exploding with angst.

🫁 Square breathing technique

My mom taught me this in order to slow down the nervous system. Breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 4, breathe out for 4, hold for 4. If you're an anxious person you probably already know this. Also a good way to fall asleep really fast.

🏙 East Williamsburg

One of the most underrated areas of Brooklyn. Not as yuppie as Williamsburg proper, and not as dirtbag as Bushwick. There's definitely a lack of good restaurants and bars but it makes up for it in space, accessibility, and quiet. Specific recs are The Anchored Inn, Win Son, and Cooper Park.
